Ready, steady, 2020
New attractions are just round the corner
In an effort to prepare for the new decade, the UAE has a number of new attractions and sights set to open in 2020, each one more exciting and innovative than the last.
Over the past decade, the UAE has welcomed a number of stunning arrivals, from the Dubai Frame to the Warner Bros. World in Abu Dhabi, to the Quranic Park, to name a few exciting attractions.
The recently-opened Bluewaters Island has attractions that will open in 2020, one of them being Ain Dubai. The world's largest observation wheel is set to be completed and open for the public next year, just in time for Expo 2020 celebrations.
At over 250 metres tall, Ain Dubai will be able to carry up to 1,400 passengers at a time, in 48 capsules. Some capsules will have private 'fine-dining' pods that can seat up to 12 people, and will be available to rent out for special occasions.
The Virgin Hyperloop One between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is set to be a major attraction in the UAE, as it is the world's first commercial hyperloop. The estimates costs range from Dh1.4 billion to Dh22 billion.
The entire project is a vacuum-tube transport system that can carry passengers and goods at speeds of over 1,000 kilometres per hour, cutting the travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to around 12 minutes. The first phase will consist of a 10-kilometre track in Abu Dhabi, and will be in place next year.
Dubai has scheduled the opening of another mall, known as Meydan One. Meydan One is set to have over 550 shops and 180 restaurants. Combined with a number of entertainment facilities including a one-kilometre-long indoor ski slope, a 12,000 sq. metre winter village, electric go-karting track and giant dancing fountain, the mall is set to outshine any other centre in the UAE. Excited tourists and residents alike can visit this space in the second half of 2020.
Ready to take a fresh new look at Dubai from a different point of view? The Palm is set to open a panoramic viewing deck known as The View, a new landmark that is 52 storeys high. Expected to open in 2020, The Palm will allow guests to have stunning views of Palm Jumeirah and beyond, and will be accessible via Nakheel Mall on Palm Jumeirah.
Water-lovers out there will be delighted to hear that Aquaventure Waterpark has begun work on an expansion, set to open for the public in the summer of 2020. With a whopping 12 new slides to be added to the waterpark, these new attractions are set to wow thrill seekers of all ages. Family-friendly water coasters and raft rockets, too, will be available for those looking for safer, more relaxing rides.
Want to enjoy some thrills in the mountains? Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah will now feature controlled bungee jumps, starting from 2020. The bungee jump will sit at a height of 1,500 metres above sea level, and 23 metres above the ground.
Visitors can jump and freefall for eight metres, with a further controlled fall of 15 metres through the air; designed to elicit adrenaline from the most experienced thrill-seekers in the region.
Keep an eye out for a new snow park to hit the emirates next year; Snow Abu Dhabi is set to open their doors to the public in 2020. Four times the size of Ski Dubai, the park will open on Reem Island.
Said to feature 13 rides and attractions from the Snowflake Garden to a Crystal Carousel, the park is designed to offer chilly adventures to all guests. With a temperature of minus two degrees celcius and around 50 centimetres of snow, kids and adults alike can frolic to their hearts' content.
