With just moments to go for this season's Indian Premier League (IPL) first match, former South Africa and Mumbai Indians opener Herschelle Gibbs has wished the franchise the best of luck.

Four-time champions Mumbai Indians will embark on their title defence against three-time winners the Chennai Super Kings at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi at 6 p.m.

It marks the return of the popular and most famous cricket league after months of uncertainty, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

And ahead of the game, Gibbs, who played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is, rallied the Mumbai Indians to set the tone and make a statement on the field.

"Mumbai Indians! First game of the new season, Go out there. Set the tone. Make the other teams quiver in their boots. Good luck. And above all, enjoy," Gibbs said in a short video, posted on Mumbai Indians' official Twitter handle.

Later, Gibbs also wished the other teams the best of luck for the tournament but picked his beloved Mumbai Indians for the title.

"Good luck to all the teams in the @IPL.@mipaltan for the win," Gibbs tweeted on his personal handle.

Gibbs, one of the hardest hitters of the game back in the day, played for the Mumbai Indians in the 2012 season. Prior to joining them, Gibbs played for the now defunct Deccan Chargers from the inaugural season in 2008 till 2010.
